ELDRIDGE, Sonoma County — The former Sonoma Developmental Center campus has returned to compliance with local fire-code requirements after problems with its hydrant system were addressed, according to October reporting based on Sonoma Valley fire officials.

What changed

A KSRO report published October 8, 2026, citing information from the Sonoma Index-Tribune and Sonoma Valley Fire officials, said the campus passed an inspection on October 5. The report states that hydrants had been unusable for months because of a broken water main and were restored after repairs.

Another local account dated October 9 reported that Sonoma Valley Fire District Chief Steve Akre had sent an inspector to the property and that the campus was deemed in compliance.

Why this matters in Eldridge

The former state institution includes many older buildings on a roughly 180-acre developed campus in a wildfire-prone area. Working hydrants are important to firefighting operations, but they are one part of fire readiness. Building condition, vegetation, staffing and access roads still matter.

What is happening to the buildings?

The October reports also describe security patrols and temporary fencing around damaged areas in response to vandalism and trespassing. Residents should respect posted restrictions and avoid entering abandoned or damaged buildings. The former campus is being evaluated for future redevelopment, but repairing hydrants is not an approval of that development proposal.

What remains unverified

The reports establish the October inspection result as described by fire officials, not a guarantee that every future safety hazard on the campus is resolved permanently. Any new hazard should be reported to appropriate authorities. For project-specific updates, follow Sonoma County and the local fire district.
