ELDRIDGE, Sonoma County — The long-running debate over redevelopment of the former Sonoma Developmental Center will continue beyond 2026 after the county postponed the draft environmental impact report.
Why the environmental document is delayed
An August 28, 2026 community update quoting Permit Sonoma says the agency is conducting additional technical and environmental analysis following comments during the scoping period. The county no longer expects to release the draft environmental impact report, or EIR, in 2026. A KSRO report from August 31 separately confirmed the delay.
What is proposed on the former campus?
The developer’s project description filed with Sonoma County outlines 990 residential units, including about 200 lower-income affordable units, a proposed 150-room hotel, commercial space, parks and supporting infrastructure on the former institution’s core campus.
These are proposed components, not existing homes or a hotel already operating at the Eldridge site.
What the earlier court ruling means
The county’s 2025 state environmental filing explains that a 2024 court ruling led to decertification of the previous environmental report and invalidation of the 2022 specific plan approvals. A revised plan and new environmental review are therefore required. The application process is continuing, but the previous approvals should not be described as current permission to build.
What residents can follow
People concerned about evacuation routes, wildfire risk, traffic, water systems, affordability and the campus’s heritage can monitor state environmental documents and notices from Permit Sonoma. The eventual draft EIR should offer a new public review opportunity; the exact release date and comment deadline had not been established in the sources reviewed.
